We have associated our personal care products with cleanliness and pleasant smells, but the reality is many of these products contain toxic chemicals. Some of the offenders include: sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS), fragrances, triclosan and parabens. They provide the lovely foam for our soaps, the beautiful clean scent we all want and the preservatives to extend the product’s shelf life. These chemicals are absorbed into our bodies and cause damage in several different ways. Many studies link them to an increased risk of depression, cancer, skin irritation and reduced energy levels.
I have been diligent in removing most toxins from my home and I now want to share my DIY Natural Hand Soap recipe. This natural hand soap has only 4 ingredients and is quick and easy to make. I have given this soap as a gift to many of my friends and they love it.
You will need:
- Glass Foaming Soap Pump Dispenser*
- Measuring cups and spoons
- 3 tablespoons The Green Beaver Company unscented Castile soap
- 1 cup spring water
- 10 drops of essential oil*
- 1/2 teaspoon Sweet Almond Oil
WHY I CHOSE THESE INGREDIENTS:
Castile Soap: This soap is made with sunflower oil and will give you a natural, gentle cleaning. After much research I have found that The Green Beaver Company is the most natural castile soap on the market. I use it in many of my DIY natural home products and it’s Canadian!!
Spring Water: Depending on where you live, your tap water may have high levels of chlorine which can interfere with the natural formula of the soap.
Sweet Almond Oil: Helps skin retain moisture and can heal chapped irritated hands.
Essential Oils: This is a natural fragrance and depending on your choice of essential oil it can add a relaxing and calming effect. Lavender and geranium, for example, is very soothing. Any of the mint essential oils provide a refreshing, awakening feeling. If you are looking for something that is an antibacterial use lemon, wild orange or melaleuca oil (tea tree oil).
WHAT ARE MY FAVOURITE ESSENTIAL OILS:
When selecting an essential oil look for the label that reads 100% pure essential oils and look for ingredient list on the label. You do not want an essential oil that has been mixed with something else or a product that is synthetic. I get asked many times what essential oils are my favourite and I have to admit I am a dōTERRA die hard (always my first choice) and I have used Aura Cacia as well.
Feel free to mix essential oils as well.
WHY I CHOSE THE GREEN BEAVER CASILE SOAP:
My favourite castile soap is The Green Beaver Company. It is biodegradable and doesn’t contain potassium hydroxide which is extremely corrosive and may cause irritation to the skin. I love that it is made from organic sunflower seed oil and coconut oil which are both rich in antioxidants like vitamins E and carotenoids. Sunflower seed oil and coconut oil are helpful in moisturizing the skin. The Green Beaver Company does not test on animals which makes it cruelty-free and is a Canadian product!
WHY YOU NEED TO PURCHASE THE GLASS FOAMING SOAP PUMP DISPENSER:
- It’s important to use a glass dispenser as the essential oils will break down plastic.
- Castile soap does not have the chemical SLS and will not create the lovely suds we like to see when using soap. This dispenser has a special pump that will foam the Castile soap.
NOTE: Periodically you will need to shake the soap pump as the castile soap will settle to bottom of the dispenser.
