HOMEMADE COUNTRY STYLE ICED TEA

There is nothing more refreshing than a cold glass of lemony iced tea, but store-bought has so many refined sugars and preservatives.  It’s so easy to make your very own with ingredients you probably already have in your home.

There are two ways to make iced tea, cold brew and hot brew.  Cold brew takes a little longer but gives a cleaner taste and a clearer appearance to the end product.  The key to making the perfect iced tea from scratch is the ingredients.  It’s important to use spring or filtered water and good quality tea.  Be sure to review the instructions ahead of time to avoid missing any details which could adversely affect the end result.

Before you take a sip of this awesome iced tea, find a nice quiet spot and put your feet up.  You will be entering into a whole new happy place!

Pour 8 cups of water into large container and add tea bags.  Let sit overnight or 8 hours undisturbed on counter.  Do not stir or move the container.

Remove tea bags.

In a small saucepan, add 2 cups water and bring to boil.  Turn heat down and add sugar.  Stir until sugar has completely dissolved.  Remove from heat and let sit until cooled down.  You may add ice to speed up cooling time.

Add lemon juice to tea water.

Add sugar water to tea water and stir well.

Add sliced lemons and ice cubes.

Serve with more ice and organic mint leaves.

Tips:

  1. If you are using tea bags that have a string, tie the tea bags together and tape the tags to the inside of the container. This will help to retrieve the tea bags easily.
  2. Never squeeze the tea bags. Squeezing them will release bitterness and will affect the flavour of the iced tea.
  3. Always use a good quality tea. Not using a good quality tea will result in a cloudy iced tea.
  4. Always use spring water or filtered water. Using poor quality water will make the tea go bad quickly.  Be sure it’s room temperature.
  5. Always store the iced tea in a glass container. Plastic will affect the taste of the iced tea.
  6. Always select a container with a sealed lid. Failing to use a well-sealed container may result in the iced tea picking up other flavours of foods in your refrigerator.
  7. Shelf life of homemade iced tea is 2 – 3 days only.
